  New home for Department of Plant Sciences

19 JANUARY 2012

The Vice Chancellor and Principal at the University of Pretoria officially opened a new building – Plant Sciences Complex - which houses diverse departments and institutes in the Plant Sciences field. The opening of the complex coincided with a launch of the SAFCOL Forestry Chair by the organisation’s acting Chief Executive, Ms Maureen Manyama-Matome.

The new 100 million complex will enhance inter and cross-disciplinary research collaboration bringing together departments and faculties that would traditionally not have interacted in traditional paradigms. The new facility includes research laboratories that are dedicated to conducting work in fields such as plant diversity, ecology, biotechnology and medicinal plant science amongst others.

  REQUEST FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A STATUTORY MEASURE (LEVY ON COTTON LINT) IN TERMS OF THE MARKETING OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS ACT

The statutory levy of 20c/kg (VAT excluded) on cotton lint, implemented on 1 April 2008, will lapse on 31 March 2012. On 10 December 2010 the Minister approved that the statutory levy of 20c/kg also be payable on cotton lint imports from outside SADC.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) and its provincial counterparts have conducted intensive state veterinary investigations over the past 8 weeks in the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Controlled Area in the northern part of the KwaZulu-Natal Province (KZN).

The investigations have shown no evidence of active FMD, or any spread of the virus.
